In a poker game, each player puts some of their chips (representing money) into the pot to indicate that they want to bet on their hand. The kitty is built by cutting a low-denomination chip from each pot in which there has been more than one raise. This money is used to pay for new decks of cards and for food and drinks. When the game ends, any chips in the kitty are distributed to the players who were still in the game.

In most forms of poker, a player’s goal is to win the pot, which is the sum of all bets made in any given deal. A poker hand consists of five cards. The value of a poker hand is in inverse proportion to its mathematical frequency: the more unusual the combination of cards, the higher the poker hand rank.
There are four types of poker hands: two pairs, three of a kind, straight, and flush. Each of these types has a specific ranking. High card is used to break ties between hands that have the same ranking.
